Positive psychology for occupational psychologists

Introduction

This course is for psychologists who are interested in positive psychology as a paradigm shift.

In this course, we will endeavor to achieve five goals:

  • Illustrate the work on happiness and its contribution to practice
  • Communicate simply the mathematical basis of models of happiness and how these models differ from models underpinning most of our work (we will remind you of those so there is no need to revise)
  • Illustrate the difference between conventional psychology and positive psychology using career counseling as an example
  • Look at the corollary in management: appreciative inquiry
  • Accept the challenge of creating a positive occupational psychology using selection as an example

Sessions

We will have five sessions corresponding to each of the points above.

We hold sessions on Friday afternoons from 2.30 to 4pm and allow a further half-an-hour for discussions.

Presenter

Jo Jordan BSc(Hons)Psych MPhil CPsychol

Jo has spent much of her life teaching conventional occupational psychology to post-graduates and consulting to multinational corporations. She has also taught in Business Schools and on management programs.

Jo is interested in exploring the fundamental nature of positive psychology and how it is creating a paradigm shift in both our thought and practice.

Resources

  • This course has its own 'read-write' password protected website.

  • All our course materials are posted on this site which is arranged as a wiki. Participants are therefore able to add and edit material as they see fit.

  • The wiki runs on a Creative Commons license, meaning, you can use and edit any material but that it is jointly owned by the people who author it and we should attribute authorship. It is also on a "share alike" basis so you may use the material in your own teaching and practice provided you allow your clients and students to do the same.

  • We nonetheless respect the copyright of our source material and provide links to Amazon and other places on the internet for those sources.

Fees

  • We are charging a fee of $ for all five sessions and use of the website for a calendar year.

  • The fee is payable to reserve a place and is fully refundable if you cancel by the Monday prior to the first session or otherwise at our discretion.

  • To provide a stimulating course, we would like to have at least 5 participants. In the event of participant numbers dropping below 5 before the course begins, we will offer you a full refund and the first places on any further course.

  • In the event of unforeseen circumstances disrupting the course, we will contact you as soon as possible and negotiate a suitable time to reconvene. Please ensure we have your home, work and mobile numbers so that we are able to contact you promptly if necessary.

Participants

  • This course is intended for psychologists and post-graduate students.

  • We do not expect you to be academics though and we will remind you of basic principles which are no longer at the front of your mind.

  • As we intend to talk about a paradigm shift, we will include other professionals and senior undergraduates if you believe you will understand where we are coming from. We can discuss the match of the course and your background with you over the phone.
